Become a School Bus Driver!

Why are buses being cancelled?

The province of Ontario has been struggling for some years with a bus driver shortage, which has only been felt in Tri-Board significantly since the pandemic. Bus drivers are employed by local school bus companies, who are contracted by Tri-Board to service our 600+ routes. When a company does not have a spare driver to cover a staff absence, they have no choice but to cancel the bus for the day.
If you’d like to be a part of the solution, submit your resume at triboard.ca/drivers to multiple companies based on the zone you select. Bus companies supply training and assistance in licensing, so you do not need experience driving a school bus before applying.

What can families do about the shortage?

  • All families using school transportation should sign up for status alerts so they know if the bus is running.
  • Create alternative travel and/or care arrangements for when the bus is cancelled
  • If you or someone you know is safety-minded and would make a great  school bus driver, please apply at triboard.ca/drivers. You do not need prior experience driving a school bus and can pick the area you wish to work in!
  • If you have questions about a specific cancellation, contact the bus company contracted to service your route. Please be kind when you inquire; Tri-Board and our contracted bus companies understand how frustrating it is to have your bus cancelled, but inappropriate and/or aggressive language will not be tolerated.

What is Tri-Board doing about the shortage?

Tri-Board’s recruitment campaign includes an easy application so potential new drivers can submit their resume once to all participating bus companies in the zone(s) they choose (visit www.Triboard.ca/drivers to apply).  Daily, we are working closely with bus companies to find coverage. We are also working with the province to enact their Recruitment and Retention Program.

What are bus companies doing about the shortage?

  • Enhanced recruitment efforts, including participating in Tri-Board’s drivers application collection
  • Signing bonuses
  • Referral bonuses
  • Attendance bonuses
  • Driver retention programs
  • Increased wages
  • All possible spare drivers and licensed office and maintenance staff are driving
  • Where possible, trying not to cancel the same bus multiple days in a row

Cancellations & Delays


Transportation Application Deadline for 2024-2025 is August 11

If your student currently has school bus transportation and there is no change to their school or address in September you do not need to take any action or reapply. Current school bus transportation will remain in place unless you are contacted directly by Tri-Board Student Transportation.  However, if you have a student for the 2024-25 school year that:
